These golden, flaky cruffins combine classic churro crunch with a savory cheesy filling, perfect for a unique and delicious brunch treat. Made with store-bought croissant dough, they are quick and easy to prepare in under an hour.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 package (8 oz or 225 g) store-bought croissant dough, thawed
  • 2 tablespoons (30 g) unsalted butter, melted
  • ½ cup (100 g) granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon (8 g) cinnamon powder
  • 1 teaspoon (2 g) smoked paprika
  • ¼ teaspoon (1.5 g) salt
  • ½ cup (50 g) shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • ¼ cup (60 g) cream cheese, softened
  • ½ teaspoon (1 g) garlic powder

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease your muffin tin lightly with butter or non-stick spray.
  2. In a small bowl, mix granulated sugar, cinnamon powder, smoked paprika, and salt to prepare the cinnamon-sugar coating. Set aside.
  3. In a separate bowl, combine shredded cheddar cheese, softened cream cheese, and garlic powder. Stir until smooth and well mixed. Microwave for 10 seconds if too stiff.
  4. Unroll the croissant dough onto a clean surface. Brush melted butter evenly over the dough. Using a sharp knife or pizza cutter, slice the dough into 12 long strips about 1 inch wide.
  5. Spread a thin line of the savory cheese filling along each strip. Carefully roll each dough strip into a spiral, ensuring the filling stays inside. Immediately roll the cruffin in the cinnamon-sugar mixture to coat the outside.
  6. Place each cruffin into a muffin cup, positioning them snugly to keep their shape.
  7. Bake for 18-22 minutes or until puffed, golden brown, and the cheese filling is bubbling slightly. Watch closely around 15 minutes to avoid burning.
  8. Cool on a wire rack for 5-10 minutes before serving.

Notes

Keep the croissant dough cold until ready to slice and fill for flakier layers. Brush butter between dough strips for extra crispiness. Avoid overfilling to prevent sogginess. Watch baking time closely to prevent burning the sugar coating. Store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days or freeze for up to 1 month. Reheat in oven at 350°F for 10 minutes to restore crispness.
